Kapil Sibal was born on 8 August 1948 in Jalandhar, Punjab. His family moved to India during the partition in 1947. After completing his schooling at St John’s High School, he attended St. Stephen’s College, Delhi, for his B.A. He then earned his LL.B. degree from the University of Delhi’s Faculty of Law and later completed an M.A. in history from St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. Sibal joined the bar association in 1972. In 1973, he qualified for the Indian Administrative Services but chose to establish his own law practice instead of accepting the offer. Later, he attended Harvard Law School, obtaining an LL.M. in 1977, and was designated as a senior lawyer in 1983.

In 1989, he became the Additional Solicitor General of India. In 1994, he defended V. Ramaswami in Parliament during impeachment proceedings. Sibal served as the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association three times: 1995–1996, 1997–1998, and 2001–2002.
